The Importance of Clean Drains & The Most Common Methods
Cleaning drains an important step in keeping plumbing systems working flawlessly. There are various methods to keep these drains clear, from DIY methods to professional drain cleaning services.
No matter which method is preferred, cleaning out drain systems should be done yearly.
Easy DIY Solutions
One of the most common DIY ways to clean out drains is baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water. ½ of a cup of baking soda should be poured down the drain, followed by ½ of a cup of vinegar. After an hour, one should pour boiling water down to wash away the mixture and any leftover debris or clogs.
Another common method is to mix two cups of baking soda, two tablespoons of cream of tartar, and half a cup of salt. one should mix this solution thoroughly by shaking it. Boil some water and pour it down the drain. Follow this with the mixture and allow it to sit for an hour before washing it away.
Note: liquid drain cleaners can contain harmful toxic chemicals that can damage pipes, so it’s best to avoid these types of cleaners.
Drain Augers
A drain auger, also known as a drain snake or a plumber’s snake, is the most common and preferred method for cleaning out clogs from drain systems and is quite effective, though not effective, at cleaning the drains out from residue buildup.
A cord with an auger is attached and guided down and into the drain system for drain snakes. It is then turned once it meets a clog, usually using a hand crank to break down the clog.
Using a drain snake is easy of use and effective in clearing basic clogs and no damage to pipes. On the other hand, drain snakes are limited to the clogs they can handle and sometimes cannot break apart more challenging clogs.
The Power of Hydro-jetting
Hydro-jetting is best performed by a professional plumber and is unsuitable for homeowners who wish to clean their drains themselves.
This method involves a non-invasive approach that uses high-pressurized water jets to eliminate plumbing systems' clogs, debris, and buildup. The plumber will inspect the home and plumbing system to find an excellent spot to use the hydro-jet. Once the hose from the equipment is inserted into the plumbing system, the plumber will pump around 20 gallons of water a minute through the durable hose of the hydro-jet. This equipment is great for clearing out both grease and mineral buildup.
However, like with most things, there are some disadvantages to using this method. If older pipes are involved, or the pipes have sustained damage in the past, hydro-jetting could cause the pipes to break completely.
