When Is It Time to Replace an Old Water Heater?

Nothing lasts forever, not even, sadly, water heaters. And while many things last a long time with thoughtful care and preventive maintenance, everything eventually reaches its natural conclusion. Water heaters have a lifespan of between 10 and 15 years. But what happens if trouble starts brewing earlier than this? How does one determine when a water heater can no longer be fixed and needs to be replaced instead?

Visible Signs of Corrosion

corrosionOutwardly, any visible signs of rust forming on the water tank can indicate that corrosion is happening. Often, where rust can be found can indicate what kind of problem the water tank has and how to fix it. Here are the most common areas on the tank where rust can form:

  • Rust in the water - any discolored water coming out of the tap could indicate a rusty water tank. A plumbing expert can rule out if this is due to sediment build-up, which can be easily fixed with a tank flush, or if the tank has begun to rust from the inside. In the case of the latter, the tank needs to be replaced.
  • Rust on top of the tank - this usually means a water leak from a pipe connection, and the water drips onto the tank, causing it to rust. Fixing the leaky connection usually stops further rusting and nips the problem in the bud unless the corrosion has progressed so much that there’s no other solution but a water heater replacement.
  • Rust on the bottom of the tank - this is commonly a strong sign that the water tank is at the end of its life span. It means the rust has eaten through the metal lining and the entire water heater needs to be replaced.

Not Enough Hot Water

Inconsistent water temperature, insufficient water heat, and even the complete lack of hot water coming out of the tap are sure signs that a water heater needs to be replaced. Sometimes there is enough hot water, but often there isn’t enough - an indicator that the water heater probably isn’t working the way it is intended to anymore. The last thing anyone needs to be dealing with - especially in the middle of winter - is a water heater that doesn’t heat water, so if cold showers aren’t your thing, it might be time to call a plumber.

Energy Bill Sticker Shock

billIf home energy bills begin to trend upward, then it’s time to rethink if this rising expense is due to an inefficient water heater. Everyday use will wear down a hot water tank, and once it reaches the end of its life span, it begins to use up more energy to produce the same amount of hot water. This could also indicate another problem with the water heater that needs to be fixed. If this is the case, it is best to call a plumber to inspect the system and recommend either a fix or a complete replacement.
