April Showers Bring Plumbing Problems
Warmer temperatures are a welcome sight when spring rolls around. But with the change in temperatures also comes a general change in the weather. Spring rains begin to roll in as soon as temperatures start to rise, bringing a wave of plumbing problems that are unique to this season. As spring rains begin to saturate the soil, the ground swells around underground piping and puts stress on the joints. When underground pipes burst or begin to leak, major problems can occur.
Saturated Soil From Spring Rains
The temperature and moisture changes that occur due to the change in seasons profoundly affect the underground structures and utilities. The plumbing that serves a home is particularly vulnerable to the soil movement that occurs as the ground swells and contracts.
Freshwater and sewer pipes are both likely to experience trouble in the spring. The elbows are particularly vulnerable to breakage because greater stress is applied. Joints are also a common point of vulnerability. Upgrading underground pipes is likely the only way to prevent this from happening. Breaks in PVC water lines are fairly common because the material can get brittle over time. PEX piping is a preferable alternative because it is more flexible and requires fewer joints.
Slab Leaks Under a House

The soil movement around underground pipes is identical to the forces that act on the foundation of a home. One of the reasons homes are built on bulky concrete slabs is to overcome soil movement by the brute force of the concrete. Unfortunately, before the slab is poured during construction, piping is laid down. Depending on the municipality the home is in and the year it was built, the likelihood of slabs may increase. For example, newer homes have special measures in place to prevent slab leaks.
Copper pipes under slabs are the most vulnerable to springing leaks. Small rocks and even grains of sand can slowly puncture copper piping. Some of the signs of a slab leak are:
- Cool moist spots on the floor
- Buckled laminate
- Mold growth on the walls
- Musty odors
Burst Pipes Underground
With all of the movement that spring induces in the soil, burst pipes are common. Burst pipes usually occur when something drastic has happened to the pipe. For example, moving soils can break PVC water lines at joints, and galvanized lines can become so corroded they completely fail. While most burst pipes are easy to spot, there are a few subtle signs that something is wrong with the irrigation system:
- Lush soil growth in patches of the lawn
- Soft spots in the lawn
- Insect infestation
- High water bills
- Sound of rushing water underground
Finding a plumber who can perform slab leak repairs and burst pipe repairs is crucial to prevent further damage. Take the time to find a trustworthy plumber before an emergency happens.
